Information update: RPNAO professional liability insurance program

As of March 31, 2014, every nurse registered to work in Ontario is required to have professional liability insurance coverage. Professional Liability Insurance (PLP) is now part of your registration requirements with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). You will find more information within the CNO By-Laws from this link by-law 44.4 (page 41)

RPNs across the province want to know if joining RPNAO will give them the insurance coverage they need to comply with this registration requirement.

The answer is YES, if you become a member of RPNAO, you will automatically receive coverage that not only meets, but exceeds these new mandatory professional liability protection (PLP) coverage requirements.

As an RPNAO member, your insurance will cover you 24 hours a day, seven days a week, worry free; all this with zero deductible. Whether you are practicing nursing as a paid employee at one job or more, or volunteering as a nurse.

And since you may be hearing from others about insurance coverage of RPNs, it is also important for you to know that not all malpractice insurance programs are created equal. RPNAO’s insurance coverage includes a number of important benefits compared with other plans, including higher loss limits, reporting period extensions, legal expense coverage, criminal defense expense coverage, reimbursements for court-related expenses and more.
